CSR3 (CSR 3: Street Car Racing) is the new chapter in the acclaimed CSR mobile drag-racing franchise, developed at NaturalMotion (Zynga). I joined the team in Birmingham as Senior Software Engineer (March 2023 – February 2025), where I worked primarily on the game’s real-time multiplayer and guild system.
My role
I owned my features end-to-end, from gameplay code in Unity3D on the client to the backend services on the server:
- Built the multiplayer experience and the guild system, working across both client (Unity3D/C#) and server.
- Engineered server-side game logic on Microsoft Orleans, using Redis for low-latency state and coordination.
- Reduced network latency to make head-to-head racing feel responsive and fair.
- Optimised client–server performance to scale the backend for large concurrent audiences.
The work I’m most proud of is the Microsoft Orleans integration on the server side. Orleans is a .NET framework for building distributed, high-scale systems on the “virtual actor” model: it lets you write stateful server logic that scales transparently across many machines without hand-managing concurrency or sharding — a great fit for coordinating thousands of simultaneous multiplayer sessions and guilds.
Technologies used
Unity3D, C#, Microsoft Orleans, Redis.
Impact & results
- Delivered stable, production-ready multiplayer and guild systems for a large-scale mobile racing title.
- Enhanced client–server performance to support 100k+ concurrent players.
- Launched robust multiplayer systems that measurably increased player engagement.
